Volunteers

Bedford and Ouse Valley Scout District comprises of seventeen Scout Groups spread across Bedford, Kempston and surrounding villages.

We offer Scouting to 1000 boys and girls aged 4 upwards every week. With rapid housing development going on in Great Denham, Cardington, Kempston and many other areas, we have ambitions to grow our movement to offer Scouting in these new and expanding areas.

How can I Help?

There are many opportunities to volunteer within Scouting. We strive to make volunteering easy, fun and flexible. So whether you wish to be part of Scouting on a regular basis or just a small number of hours per month, per term or per year, there will be something for you.

• We need Section Leaders and Assistant Leaders across all age groups, usually operating once per week. It is hugely rewarding. There are also non-uniformed roles allowing regular participation as sectional assistants.
• Can you light a fire, boil water, and are you well organized – perhaps being an adult helper on a weekend camp and supervising the camp kitchen might be right up your street.
• Perhaps you fancy a background support role at a local Group – maybe you can help to raise funds or to organize events for your local Group.
• Do you have a particular skill – maybe you are a DIY whizz and can help out with maintenance, repairs or alterations in your local Scout Hut.
• Perhaps you are good with numbers and could embrace a Treasurer role.
• Do you have a particular skill, either through your job or a hobby, that could be shared with young members.
• Have you always wanted to become proficient in an activity and become a skills instructor for that activity – kayaking, archery, hiking and hill-walking, climbing and abseiling, shooting.
• The District Scout Shop is a non-profit service running once per week to make access to uniforms, badges and programme material easy for local Groups. Could you help with staffing the shop even on an infrequent basis, or do you fancy a more involved management role with the shop.
• The local District camp-site Jordan’s Close in Great Barford offers watersports, climbing, archery and shooting activities as well as an extensive camp-site, a tree-house and other facilities. Perhaps you fancy spending some time cultivating the site and helping to keep its services in running order.
• District Active Support allows people to give their time to Scouting without necessarily being tied to a particular Group, on a flexible basis.
